The Mets had traveled to St. Louis for their first regular-season game, scheduled for April 10th, 1962. They were staying at the Grand Chase Park Plaza hotel. The players ate dinner.

They were ready.

They were Amazin’.

Then it rained. Game postponed.

Fine. No big deal. The players headed back upstairs after dinner. A group of them crowded into the elevator.

The elevator went three floors.
