Diane Oliver, a Black young writer in the 1960s, wrote stories about the horrors of racism in America. However, in 1966 Oliver died in a motorcycle accident at the age of 22, days before she was supposed to graduate from the Iowa Writers' Workshop. It wasn’t until October, 2021 that cultural critic Michael A. Gonzales discovered her writing and penned the essay "The Short Stories and Too-Short Life of Diane Oliver," published in 2022. That essay has led to Oliver's rediscovery by the literary community and the forthcoming collection of her stories (Neighbors and Other Stories) to be published in America and England.
