I want to be absolutely clear about this.
The arrest of Don Lemon by the Trump administration is an abuse of power. Full stop.
Don Lemon is not a criminal. He’s a journalist. And more than that—he’s someone who stood by me when it mattered most. When I was beaten and nearly killed defending the Capitol on January 6th, Don didn’t hedge. He didn’t look away. He told the truth, even when it was unpopular, and he’s continued to do that ever since.
Over the years, Don has become one of my closest friends. I know his character. I know his integrity. And I know this action has nothing to do with justice and everything to do with intimidation.
This is what authoritarianism looks like: using the machinery of the state to punish critics, silence the press, and send a message to anyone else who might speak out.
I stand with Don Lemon. I stand with a free press. And I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms.
If they can do this to him, they can do it to anyone. And that should concern every American—regardless of party.
