I find this all so depressing. Being a scientist is a special job. We are beholden to the truth, as best as we can approximate it. It is our duty to follow the data, not to sell books, not to promote a career, and not to defend our past work. When we make excuses for our field, when we refuse to see what is plain to people outside it, we lose credibility. We lose trust. And we deserve to.
