These colorful birdhouses here in the PNW indicate that something is nearby.
Something big.
What exactly?
Trolls!
Yup, the Seattle area has five wooden trolls created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, who has built trolls all around the world.
All are made from recycled materials and mostly tucked away in parks or other green areas.
The idea behind the trolls is to get people out exploring with family and friends. For that reason, the trolls' location is disclosed only generally. That way, people can have a bit of fun troll-hunting until they find each troll.
That's where the birdhouses come in!
Their presence indicates you are in the general area of a troll, and as you hunt for the troll, you'll know you're on the right trail if you spot more birdhouses.
I love this idea, and as soon as I heard about it, I made a point to track them down.
Their names are Frankie Feetsplinter, Bruun Idun, Pia the Peacekeeper, Jakob Two Trees, Oscar the Bird King.
Jakob is the only one I haven't yet had time to find!
