I hear you. It's not binary. That's the beauty of the platform. If you want to go paid, you can. If you want to stay free forever, you can. If you want a mix between the two, go for it. One thing I chose to do was to get off the Substack app and that has been immensely helpful. I can curate what I see and who I engage with much more now, which is lovely.
