I have been quietly enjoying

’s recent challenges and though I would dip my toe in the water for In the moment:

In the moment, all else disappears. Perhaps that more than anything else is what motivates me to keep looking through the lens. Photography is about moments - of celebration, of record, of interpretation, of inspiration. For me it’s the small things that change the needle on the day, that transport me and it’s among the ordinary at our feet that I find these moments. They are often reflected in water which offers a different way of seeing, but I now carry this vision to the land, to the intimate places low down. Moments require us to look closely and be open to possibility.

On Friday morning I went out wondering if I would find a moment suitable for

’s challenge. Only taking a macro lens, I went into the wood thinking perhaps that I would search among the moss and the lichen; I never got that far. On the edge of the pine, sunlight was just reaching the vegetation on the moss (raised bog). I follow a deer trail new to me, along an old shallow ditch where bog asphodel grows. At ground level, I find an unexpected magic amid the wet parts of the moss. This is a way of photographing this place that is new to me, my lens hood touching and at times dipping into the water. There is backlighting and bokeh, and in places the surface tension is visible. In these moments of unexpected possibility, I lose myself and find joy irrespective of the outcome.

I return two days later after another afternoon of heavy rain, but the moss has drunk deeply and all but a few tiny pockets are dry. The moment has gone, but I’m glad to have been there for it. Here are my favourites from my first visit.
