I print on Epson Velvet Fine Art paper with my Epson ink jet photo printer, then I back the print with a piece of cotton muslin or buckram fabric using 3M Spray 77 adhesive. I still have to be very careful when I'm stitching so that I don't damage or tear the paper, and try to handle the printed surface of the photo as little as possible so as not to damage the photo. This is why these pieces are quite small. I know there are also pre-treated fabrics that will print with ink jet printers, and also printable canvas, but I've always sewn into paper rather than fabric, so I've never tried them.
