The app for independent voices

I said no to a TV interview with a globally known broadcaster today.

It’s the kind of opportunity that looks pretty and shiny on paper. The kind you screenshot and send to a friend with a “Can you believe this?” text.

It would have been good for my writing career. Good visibility, good for credibility.

But it wasn’t the right fit. It wasn’t my story to tell, nor my area of expertise.

And it wasn’t something I want my name attached to long term.

That last part matters more to me now than the temporary glow of being “seen.”

In my 20s, I would have said yes in a heartbeat. In my 30s, I probably would have said yes and then quietly stressed about whether I was out of my depth.

Today, I paused long enough to ask a better question:

Does this align with the work I actually want to be known for?

The honest answer was no.

Sometimes growth doesn’t look like expansion, or collecting bigger platforms and louder opportunities. It can also mean restraint, and knowing when to say no.

I want to be trusted. I want to be known for thoughtful journalism and grounded, lived experience — not commentary outside my lane just because the invitation was flattering.

Turning it down felt… steady.

Have you ever said no to something impressive because it didn’t fit who you’re becoming?
