In the pursuit of security, we’re taught to start out by looking for stability. And the older I get, the less I believe in stability.

A stable job can disappear. Industries change. Companies get bought, downsized, reorganized. AI is already taking jobs away, and many of them aren’t coming back.

What security actually looks like now — and going forward — is adaptability.

Knowing you can figure things out. Understanding how to find new clients. Being able to learn a new tool. Pivoting when something stops working.

Sure, stability is comforting. It’s familiar.

But adaptability is what allows you to keep going when something stable falls apart. And increasingly, it may be the only real form of security left.
