The Power of Mentorship in Times of Uncertainty

I recently sat with Tendai “The Beast” Mtawarira, an inspiring legend, which made me think: before we follow our dreams, there is always that fear, but we must still reach those heights.

In this week’s Mindful Mondays with Shudu, Tendai opens up about courage, legacy, and the mentors who shaped his journey. From his early years in Zimbabwe to becoming a global rugby champion and UNICEF ambassador, his story is one of mental fitness, mindful leadership, and giving back to the next generation.

His reflections could not be more timely. In South Africa, the unemployment rate rose to 32.9% in the first quarter of 2025, and over 37% of young people between 15 and 24 are not in employment, education, or training (Reuters, 2025, UCT News, 2025). It is within this reality that mentorship becomes more than guidance—it becomes an act of care, a mental health intervention, and a tool for resilience.

Research from the SA Journal of Business Management (2025) and Fort Hare University (2024) shows that mentorship not only supports self-belief and employability but helps bridge the confidence gap that comes with systemic unemployment. When someone sees your potential and invests in it, it changes how you see yourself.

Tendai’s insights remind us that success is not just personal achievement—it’s about multiplying it for others. Finding mentors who help us grow and passing that knowledge forward is how we build legacy, community, and hope.
