What do I Need and What Am I Really Longing For?
Our shadow self is a poor translator.
It screams in judgment. It lashes out in envy. It drips with contempt.
But underneath, it whispers something much more honest.
Longing.
Shame.
Those emotions are far more vulnerable, so our minds often translate them into something that feels safer to express.
Maybe your judgment is really grief for the life you didn’t choose.
Maybe your envy is pointing toward an ambition you’ve buried.
Maybe your contempt is protecting the ache of wanting meaningful work.
Maybe you’re longing for purpose.
Maybe you’re longing for confidence.
Maybe you’re longing for permission to take up space.
Maybe you’re longing for connection.
Maybe you’re longing for peace.
The shadow rarely says what it actually means.
It speaks in symptoms.
Our job isn’t to believe the first translation. Our job is to become curious enough to discover the original language.
Shadow work is the practice of translating uncomfortable emotions into unmet needs.
And once you understand the message…
Everything changes.
