Katie Archibald announced her retirement from professional cycling today, and is retraining as a nurse.

She won a remarkable 51 medals at Olympic, world, European and Commonwealth level, was one of Britain’s standout Olympians of the last decade and showed immense strength in the face of great personal loss during that time too.

This quote from her has stuck with me:

“Riding the last lap of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games team pursuit final, I was so connected to the effort it was… like my mind left my body. I don’t know if I’ll be able to experience that feeling in the future.”

I think it sums up the uncertainty many top athletes say they feel at the moment they step away from sport, that they may never get to live a high quite like they did when they competed at their very peak.
