We definitely hit a couple of roadblocks in trying not to repeat directors, but that rule was limited to each decade, so we could repeat them as long as the films were from different eras (this came in handy for John Carpenter, especially). I’m a little embarrassed to admit, though, that we didn’t stray too far from the horror genre, but that’s because it’s the genre we’ve spent the most time with. We’re lifelong fanatics, so getting us out of our wheelhouse is a bit of a challenge. There were a handful of dramas and a couple of comedies, though, if I remember correctly. And quite a few films from outside of the U.S., for sure.
I just remembered I made a top 100 on Letterboxd for myself earlier this year, and it does have a moderately healthy mix of genres, but those were really personal choices, as well. I’d love to try to make a top 100 that specifically limits the inclusion of horror films someday. Ha.
