When you sit down to have a box-check for the pet-the-dog moment, it’s very important that that pet-the-dog moment actually makes sense for the milieu, character, etc. Otherwise it sticks out like a sore thumb shouting “look, I checked a box.” If it doesn’t make sense, you need to set up why it actually makes sense in your world, or your character will come across like a moron. Things like this makes me angry because most of them just reek of lazy, formulaic writing, and are an insult to my intelligence.
