We’re into Week 3 of “There’s Frogspawn In My Pond And I’m Taking You All With Me On That Pond Journey Whether You Want To Go Or Not” and we have tiny tadpoles.
They still haven’t hatched from the spawn.
The freeze we had over the past week seems to have damaged the spawn jelly so there have been some casualties.
The different depths that the spawn is positioned at has made a difference too.
Clump 1 has sunk further into the pond where it’s colder and darker, so things there are a bit murky and not as clear to see.
One of the tadpoles moved, which I managed to catch on video.
Clump 2 is right at the surface and the solar oxygenator means there are lots of air bubbles.
The tadpoles are growing well but the spawn there has received most damage.
Clump 3 is positioned at a midway depth and the tadpoles there seem to be the biggest.
The weather turned and the cold has meant my frogs have re-hibernated, so the spawn has been left to survive the cold, or not.
There will be fewer tadpoles than I initially thought.
I managed to catch one of the tadpoles doing an eerie headstand and then just staying there, which frankly looked a bit Alien.
Like it was about to whisper “mother” in a deep voice and completely scare the bejeesus out of me.
But I’m not one to overreact, so I’m definitely not getting the ick every time I think about it.
I'm still in the process of trying to rig an underwater cam and will update you on any progress as soon as I've managed to catch any footage.
(I'm writing that as if I'm very relaxed about it when we all know I'll be announcing it with trumpets and Royal Fanfares and also moderately untrue statements about Oscar nominations and a possible Bafta.)
I will post the video of the “Alien Tadpole That Looks Like It's About to Whisper ‘Mother’ In A Deep Voice To Scare The Bejeesus Out Of Me” separately.
