Building community is a set of skills and a conception of self that my generation of parents is totally uncomfortable with. Chief among these is claiming authority. Community by its very nature is authority and power… power in you, in your actions and your relationships, unmediated by institutions. And that alone breaks all the rules of consumer, mainstream Millennial upbringing.

Had the same conversation today with a father of young children that I’ve had a million times, and we both agreed that it’s all anyone with young kids ever talks about:

Where is the community? How do we find it? How do we build it? Is our desire for community real or did we pick up the idea somewhere?
