Because Democrats brought so many Somalis to Minneapolis, remaining in political power there now requires patronage to the demographic. They are heavily dependent on public assistance, and welfare fraud is endemic in their communities. Their version of Islam is fundamentalist and extreme, with little girls usually required to wear both head and body coverings. Female genital mutation is also endemic to their cultural practices.

In June 2025, Mayor Jacob Frey released an official video in Somali condemning the U.S. government's efforts to restrict incoming migration from Somalia. This is the same mayor who oversaw (managed) the burning of Minneapolis during the 2020 BLM-Antifa riots.
