A particularly powerful moment came when secondary teachers observed primary classrooms. Many had never visited a primary school before. They were struck by the strong routines, the high expectations for presentation, and teachers’ deep knowledge of their pupils. They saw Year 6 children doing work that was, frankly, more demanding than some Year 7 schemes. Several secondary subject leaders came to an uncomfortable conclusion: their Year 7 curriculum wasn’t challenging enough.
