Goal: Explain how language achieves effects and influences readers.

Key Rules & Tips:

1. Select Rich Language: Pick words, phrases, or images with multiple layers of meaning.

2. Drill Down into Connotations: Explain why the writer chose a specific word over a synonym.

3. Ban Generic Reader Comments: Avoid phrases like “it makes the reader feel” – be specific about effect.

4. Common Strengths:

   • Analyse how parts of an image work together.

   • Track patterns or extended metaphors.

   • Link sound of words to meaning.

5. Avoid: Feature spotting, literal interpretations, empty synonyms.

6. Instead: Explain what each feature does - its effect.
