The Screwtape Letters ☑️ 9/10. CS Lewis is brilliantly insightful. The premise of a head demon writing to a lower demon, giving him advice on how to corrupt a young man, feels uncomfortably realistic and probable. On top of that, the advice given is eerily compatible with modern day temptations and sin.
My favorite quote was “The long, dull monotonous years of middle-aged prosperity or middle-aged adversity are excellent campaigning weather (for demons).” As a toddler mom, I keenly feel the monotonous nature of prosperity and adversity in my day to day. It was a good reminder to not allow the ebbs and flows of motherhood to be campaigning grounds for temptation, but rather to embrace the rhythm of life as a God-given gift.
My one complaint is I feel like I need to study the book in depth. There were too many hefty thoughts and arguments to reflect on. It’s not a book to just read and put away, but one to read, ponder, reread and jot notes down. I can’t wait to dissect this book with my children one day.
First read of the year done. On to the next one!
