Notes

Fascinating read. Key take-aways at the moment:

  • Positive feelings, long term, related to how respected you are

  • “Womanhood” attained by biological markers (having children, or at least the ability to have children), whereas “manhood” is a social status conferred by your peers once it is earned (and proven continually)

  • Status is earned in two ways, dominance (associated in humans with narcissism and forceful behaviour) and prestige (conferred again by others, depending on what you can do for them). Prestige is more socially desirable, as domineering people are disliked, generally.

  • Status in terms of respect by your peers is, in fact, more coveted than socioeconomic status (money)

A question that occurred to me: Is it reasonable to say, then, that men are particularly vulnerable to the corruption or absence of social norms/values? In their absence (missing strong, positive role models), they are aimless, with no way to earn their status as a man. In a corrupt society, they will seek to earn that status through the embodiment of its corrupt values.
