Unkindness doesn’t always look like cruelty. Sometimes it looks like a closed mind dressed up as a principle. Someone who hears your whole explanation and comes back with the same verdict they started with.
That’s not a conviction. That’s a wall.
Using a tool to think more clearly is not cheating. A painter who uses a reference photo is not cheating. A writer who uses a dictionary is not cheating. A person who talks through ideas out loud before putting them on paper is not cheating. The work is still theirs. The soul of it is still theirs.
If your definition of authentic only includes one narrow path to creation, that says less about the work and more about the size of the door you’re willing to open.
I’m not interested in defending my process to anyone. But I am interested in people who stay curious. Who can hold a new idea without immediately reaching for a verdict.
That’s not just good writing. That’s kindness.
And I need it around me.
