Who owns the work in the age of AI?

There’s a lot of noise right now claiming that using AI means you’re not a real writer. Or worse, that it’s plagiarism.

That’s not how plagiarism works.

Plagiarism is taking someone else’s work and passing it off as your own. Writers have always used tools. Research assistants, editors, archives, search engines. AI is just the newest one.

The real question isn’t did you use AI.

It’s did you think.

Did you add context, judgment, perspective? Did you understand what you wrote?

Because readers can tell the difference between something assembled and something understood. They always could.

AI can help you write faster. It cannot help you matter.

And that part still belongs to the writer.
