Murakami in his book Norwegian Wood recalls a memory his friend/lover and writes, "it takes time, though, for her face to appear. And as the years have passed, the time has grown longer. The sad truth is that what I could recall in 5 seconds all too soon needed 10, then 30, then a full minute- like shadows lengthening at dusk. Someday, I suppose, the shadows will be swallowed up in the darkness."
That got me thinking that it is both comforting and heartbreaking that how over time you slowly forget the little details of people or places or things. How someone or something you once loved so deeply is now a hazy blur dream you once had and can't quite remember anymore.
And maybe that's why someone came up with the idea of portraits or statues and then later photographs and videos so you can treasure the moments before they become a hazy blur dream.
