✨Optimal Bar Chart Proportions✨

What are the ideal proportions for a bar chart? Here’s what I usually go by -- things are looking good if:

- You can grasp the chart in a single glance:

If you find your eyes jumping from the beginning to the end of the bars, it’s a sign they might be too wide – consider narrowing them.

- It's easy to compare values:

This one’s a bit subjective, but try hiding the data labels and see how well you can estimate the differences between bars.

- Text and labels fit neatly inside the bar:

The numbers don’t cling to the edges, and the balance between text size and bar height feels just right.-

Bars are neither too wide nor too thin:

If bars are too wide, the text gets drowned -- the bars feel too heavy. If too narrow, they start to look like a grid and the white space competes for attention. Ideally, the gap between bars should be about ~30-50% of the bar width.
