Yesterday, I was standing with a group of pastors on the corner of 34th and Portland in Minneapolis, not long after federal agents had killed Renee Good. There were protesters, media, and local police. As more people arrived, and more local police showed up, tensions were rising. The rage of the community was justified, and palpable. Along the edge of the police tape and barricades, two women were walking around handing out cups of herbal tea. “it’s got some woodsy oak in there” one said as she offered it to me. As I said no thank you, a young man near us began shouting loudly at the police, and she turned to me and said “I think he probably needs some tea.” I watched as she walked over to him and quietly handed him a cup. “it’s herbal” she said quietly. He was so disarmed by her offer, saying a polite “no thank you” with a smile and a kind of laugh. It just… changed the entire vibe in a way that I’m still thinking about a day later. I’m feeling quite numb today, in between bouts of rage and grief, but I keep remembering those ladies, who found the loudest, angriest people, and just offered them tea… their own act of resistance. So small, but so powerful. I love Minnesotans, how we show up and come together and take care of each other. I know the media won’t show you these two ladies. It won’t show you those little moments where a warm drink on a cold day changed a whole vibe. But it’s happening. And it matters. So when you’re feeling helpless or hopeless, remember that sometimes all you need to say is “tea? it’s herbal.”
