“In Chandni (1989), when a phone call tells her that her needlessly daredevil lover has had an accident, her expression of pain almost overshadows the accompanying loud music. In Lamhe (1991) her father’s death leads to shock, breakdown and silence in a matter of a few seconds. It is a performance of silence of course, but one which conveys the shock of death. The shock that a whole person can just stop existing.”
