A King and Two Queens Hit The Met Gala

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky shut down the carpet ten minutes after it officially closed.

They understood the assignment. In a sea of Oscar-style frocks, these two arrived as wearable art installations — and will probably break the internet by morning.

Rihanna: custom Maison Margiela — bejeweled mock-neck bodice, shimmery crinkled fabric wrapped over her shoulders and draped to the floor. Metallic makeup. Golden curls.

Rocky: baby pink Chanel tuxedo with an oversized robe coat. The man could make a bin bag look like art. (He really could.)

Their only real competition? Queen Bea herself.

Beyoncé co-chaired the night and still made the entire carpet feel like a supporting act. Custom Balmain by Olivier Rousteing: a sheer sculptural corset mimicking a human ribcage in diamonds and rhinestones, a feathered train in cream and dust blue, a diamond sun crown on her head.

For context: this year's theme — Costume Art, dress code Fashion Is Art — marks the Costume Institute's first exhibition in its brand new Condé Nast Galleries. Eight months. Nearly 12,000 square feet. Hundreds of avant-garde designs masquerading as fine art.

Meanwhile, outside: Protesters from "Everyone Hates Elon" gathered to flag the irony of a $75,000-per-ticket gala made possible by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez. Hard to argue with the optics.

This was fashion's biggest night, on full display.

While most of us can't afford gas.
