I try to be a smart graphic designer. But there are some challenges with this.
It is difficult! There is a fine line between clever and cliché and it can be difficult to tell what side of the line you are on when you are too close to an idea. I’m also kind of dumb overall which doesn’t help.
A lot of people don’t actually want smart design. They think they do, but they really want something safe, and you don’t learn this until it’s too late.
This is why you can’t fall in love with ideas in this industry. Because they’ll break your heart if you do, and there will always be another one.
Most days I know this and have no problem with it, because I’ve been around long enough now to know better. But today’s not one of those days. Feeling a little graphic design heartbreak this evening. 💔
