Stuck in the South China Sea after the evacuation of Saigon and its fall the next day, 30 April 1975, and finally heading for land - but found only more personal tragedy. From my unpublished work after The Bite of the Lotus: an intimate memoir of the Vietnam War which I’ve excerpted here.

Agree or disagree with think-tank policy proposals - it doesn’t matter. They will be ignored. In a healthy political system, policy papers shape strategy. In the Trump system, they decorate the backdrop of a political reality show.

Thanks to Richard and Jersey inviting me to join. Love their “3 TS” to describe the geopolitical impacts of Trump in Asia (which is actually a 4th T come to think of it).

We need a penal code NOT written by lawyers. It has become so ensnarled in legalese that, as is often said, a DA can induce a grand jury indict a cheese sandwich.

In 1985, Sol Wachtler, then the chief justice of New York's Supreme Court said, “Any good prosecutor can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich.”
