Blow on the surface dust of like half of publishing industry op ed-type content online and you’ll find hardcore nude mortality terror. I’m thinking in particular of a recent post-London Book Fair LinkedIn post I read by a Consultant Man who felt “none of it mattered” or whatever in the age of AI…but also like 83748473 other essays besides that, including many of my own. The frantic efforts to perform insider status, the humblebrags, the railing against gatekeepers’ inattention: it’s all just help, help, help, tell me I won’t dissolve, tell me I’m relevant, tell me I won’t be forgotten, help I’m going to die. It’s people!
