The older I get the more convinced I am that the line between "mental illness" and "evil" is blurry and in some (not all) cases, "mental illness" is simply what happens when a person who wants to "be bad" gives themself fully over to the urge to be a hateful shit to everyone around them, to the point where they are homeless, throwing bricks off highway overpasses, sparking wildfires, pushing women onto subway tracks, smearing feces on restroom walls. Their "mental illness" is that they are evil and getting off on being evil, and we'd be better off as a society by dispensing with therapeutic language that removes agency from these professional misanthropes. They are not bad because they have a mental illness, they have a mental illness because they are bad.
