Macabre Monday is upon us again, following like a shadow ready to consume light.
This week, while some of you are filling out your brackets for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, I get to experience March Madness firsthand. I'll be covering first and second round games in Salt Lake City on Thursday and Saturday. I've done this many times during my 20-year sports journalism career and it's so much fun. The energy and the adrenaline being in that atmosphere is unmatched.
What does this have to do with horror, you ask?
Horror stories intersect so many elements life. Still, sports and horror is not a coupling you see much. It exists as a background element in some horror stories (like The Faculty, for example) but sports don't usually play a central role in driving the plot. I find that interesting because sports are such a big part of life for many people. Horror excels at putting a frightening twist on ordinary things that are a part of normal life.
Do you think specific sports could be an effective springboard for a horror story? What would make those sports-centric tales scary?
