The irony of this cannot be understated, especially as copyright concerns continue to persist against Google and its peers as they continue to scrape and train their own models on public (and allegedly copyrighted) materials on the web.
This grip on the part of Google smacks of OpenAI and Meta’s initial reaction to DeepSeek R1, which brought distillation into the spotlight, which has since dissipated, as well as accusations of “theft”.
