I worry that other states will try to replicate Mamdani’s popularity by copying this plan. I believe that would be a grave mistake. I truly believe the approach of pushing universality downward year by year without supporting babies, afterschool, or summer care is the opposite of the holistic policy that is necessary to successfully build a durable, equitable universal child care system.
