My submission to this week’s Aminus3 Photography‘s prompt “Smoke.”
This image is one a few that I took during our visit to the vibrant Jemaa el-Fnaa in Marrakesh, Morocco. Though the trip to Morocco was a rather taxing adventure, Marrakesh — our last stop — allowed us to savor the intensity of sights and sensations rather than be accosted by them.
As afternoon slips toward evening, the great square of Jemaa el-Fnaa begins one of its daily transformations. The orange juice vendors, water sellers, snake charmers, and street performers gradually give way to the crowds gathering for the night market. Smoke rises from dozens of food stalls as grills are lit and cooks prepare for the evening rush. Framed by the labyrinth of the souk, café terraces, and the ancient medina, the square fills with movement, noise, and anticipation.
In this image, the drifting smoke becomes both subject and symbol—a visible sign of a place in transition, where the day's spectacles yield to the nightly ritual of food, commerce, and community where residents and visitors sit side by side and indulge in Morocco’s culinary wealth.
