I’m having a hard time with where to put Chekhov! It’s seems hard to compare novels with short stories in this context. But, focusing on personal enjoyment, I guess I’ll go with:

  1. Chekhov

  2. Dostoevsky

  3. Tolstoy

  4. Gogol

On the level of personal enjoyment rather than critical assessment (like I’d even be capable of articulating such a thing), my ranking would be:

  1. Gogol

  2. Dostoevsky

  3. Chekhov
