Last week, I shared how I’m challenging myself to read through the Bible slowly, following the practice of Lectio Divina (as best as I can).
As I reflected on Genesis 1:1-5, a few thoughts stood out to me that I couldn’t shake:
Where there is chaos, God is present and moving. Before anything existed—when the earth was “formless and void”—God was there, hovering over it all. The first thing we see in Scripture is His presence over the chaos. He hasn’t changed. But maybe the real question is: Has His place changed in my heart?
God brings order and potential out of nothingness. In just five verses, God creates, names, and organizes. He transforms “without form and void” into something with purpose and beauty. That’s who He is—a Creator who sees potential where others see emptiness.
God calls His creation “good.” This one stopped me. God doesn’t rush through His work; He pauses to see it and calls it good. How often do we stop to recognize the good that God is doing in and through us?
God creates time—and is above it. “There was evening and morning, the first day.” Time itself is part of God’s creation. It doesn’t control Him, and it shouldn’t control us. God is above it all, even when we feel stuck in it.
What’s standing out to you in your own reading?
