Weird things we all think are normal in Corporate: We have built performance systems where a "3" means "meets expectations," which sounds neutral until you realize that in the actual operation of the system, a 3 means "average, and also please do not notice that your ‘raise’ doesn’t even match the rate of inflation."
A person who delivered every single thing in their job description, every single thing their manager asked, and every single thing the organization committed them to, will receive a 3. They will be told the 3 is fine. They will be told the 3 reflects the value of their work. Then in an 8% inflationary 5% of their compensation will disappear, and their 3% "merit" increase will leave them poorer than they were last year, and we will act surprised that they are updating their resume.
