One of the biggest barriers to rural representation isn’t a lack of good people.
It’s a lack of support for people who might be willing to run.
In rural communities, county party leaders are often the ones asking the question:
“Have you ever thought about running?”
But when someone says yes, the next question is usually:
“Okay… now what?”
That’s why I wrote the Rural Candidate Workbook — a practical guide designed specifically for rural candidates running for local office, county leadership, or first-time state legislative races.
This week, something really encouraging happened.
Thanks to one generous donor, rural Iowa counties with fewer than 10,000 residents will receive a sponsored copy that their county party can give to a potential candidate.
It’s a small thing, but sometimes a small thing at the right moment can change who decides to step forward.
If you believe rural communities deserve strong local leadership, there are also opportunities to sponsor copies for candidates, county parties, and training groups.
Because building the next generation of rural leaders doesn’t start with a campaign.
It starts with someone asking:
“Have you ever thought about running?”
