Clinical research shows that abuse is characterized by patterns that create fear and limit autonomy - NOT by how visible or extreme any single incident appears (Herman, 1992; Stark, 2007).
This is why it is often missed.
Nothing looks catastrophic in isolation.
But over time, choice disappears.
When fear shapes behavior, harm is already present.
