I started reading How to Kill Men and Get Away With It. I don't know what exactly I was expecting, but at the very least I expected it to be a page-turner.

Instead, in the first 70-odd pages, the protagonist unintentionally kills two people. The first incident was tense and could reasonably be seen as self-defence. The second, however, felt completely forced and absurd.

If the protagonist is going to kill people, I'd rather she actually plans it. At least then there's some forethought involved, and her perspective becomes interesting to follow. But if she's just stumbling into murders through a series of ridiculous circumstances, she comes across as naive and painfully stupid rather than compelling.

The tone doesn't help either. The author is clearly aiming for quirky and witty, but the narration feels more mean-spirited than clever. Instead of being charmed by the protagonist's voice, I mostly found myself irritated by it.

I don't have the patience to follow her stupid trail of more accidental deaths. If someone has read this book, feel free to spoil it for me 🥱
