One of the early tasks a writer’s confronted with is this idea of finding their voice. If they have a gracious instructor or mentor, then they’ll pragmatically define “voice” in terms of one’s own special blend of diction, tone, syntax, formality, dialect, jargon, attention, etc. What they don’t tell you about is the other voice that develops, which is especially true for poets. It’s an inner Muse, insistent on creating mini-monologues out of every dangling thing you encounter during your day. It won’t leave you alone, especially when you’re trying to relax; it will pester you into poetry or prose.
