“Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of bread.” (Luke 24:35).
The two men who walked with the risen Christ were kept from seeing who he was until Jesus took, blessed, broke, and gave them bread. Just before this, Jesus opened the door of the Scriptures to them, himself being the key.
And yet, they weren’t said to KNOW him until a sacramental moment. The Greek word is ginōskō, which is not merely mental ascent but a deeply relational and personal connection. The version of the same word is used of Jesus elsewhere in describing his relationship with the Father.
All this to say… to know and love Jesus, one must not only understand the gospel and the Scriptures (BOTH ESSENTIAL). But one must taste and see, receive and relish, eat and drink the risen Christ in faith.
Lord, help me to feast on you every day.
