Objectification means to make an object of something. If you already think a woman is no more than an object, you will see nothing wrong with treating her like one. If, on the other hand, you see women as persons — unrepeatable, incommunicable, body-soul selfhoods — then objectification is startlingly rude at best, dystopian horror at wo…
“Objectifying” a woman just means you think they’re attractive. Why the dumb word?

“If the only prayer you said was thank you, that would be enough.” ~ Meister Eckhart
O how thankful I am for God’s wondrous creation, for what Jesus did on the cross! How thankful I am for Mother Mary, for the Catholic Church, the sacraments, for the guidance of the Holy Spirit! There is so much to be grateful for as a Christian 🙏

“The meaning of fiction,” Flannery O’Connor contends, “is not abstract meaning but experienced meaning” (see her essay, “Writing Short Stories”)
As I explain in my book, BEAUTY & IMITATION, “our experience of the kind of showing that is a short story does not give us conceptual knowledge but a kind of “lived” know-how. The short story, in…
An excellent little essay in defense of (good) free verse poetry. Probably a good comparison of development here is from Gregorian chant all the way up to rigorous hymnody. Worth the read!
I spoke with my pastor in his office for an hour yesterday. We discussed apostolic succession and Anglican history and my struggle to dig up the unhealthy roots of my evangelical past. I asked him point blank if I should stay Anglican instead of becoming Catholic. And, like a good pastor should, he didn’t offer simple answers; he asked me questions instead. He listened with empathy and humor, and challenged my thinking about my thinking.
“Christianity is a big manor house, Wendi,” he said. “Some…

I like the Wheel of Time series on Prime, but some of the writing is so lazy and cliché. In episode 2 of the new season, a princess sneaks in to try on her mother’s crown. She’s startled by someone she didn’t expect, who says, “It looks good one you.” She says, “I didn’t hear you come in.” And so on. You know exactly how the rest of the exchange went because it’s been done a hundred million times in other shows and movies. It’s far from the only example in the series too. Why waste precious screen time on this stuff? Do something new.

I can think of no greater proof of God than that the mathematical perfection of the humble piano should sound so heavenly—a truth the Ancient Greeks understood quite well in their own pagan way.
