I know nothing about guns, but the Rittenhouse case got me curious. In attempting to understand the ins and outs of Wisconsin gun statutes, I learned something interesting, which may in fact be typical for states in which hunting is an important part of the culture. "Dangerous weapons" are defined as those that can be concealed; e.g., pistols, guns with a barrel shorter than 12 inches, even martial arts weapons like nunchuks. The rationale is that small weapons can be hidden, thus depriving a potential victim of the benefit of foreknowledge. On the other hand, the AR-15 that Rittenhouse was carrying is not considered "dangerous" in that sense, because one can see it ahead of time and run away. Other very precise rules and regs are included in the Wisconsin code to account for minors engaged in target practice and hunting with an adult.
