BIBLE STUDY: What Is 666 in the Bible?

“Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.”

— Revelation 13:18

Few numbers in Scripture are as misunderstood as 666. The Bible does not present it as superstition or mystery alone, but as a symbol with theological meaning tied to the final rebellion against God.

The Number of Man:

In Scripture, six is repeatedly associated with humanity:

Man was created on the sixth day (Genesis 1:26–31)

Seven represents God’s perfection and completion

666 is triple six — humanity raised to its highest expression apart from God, yet still falling short of divine perfection (777).

This is man glorifying himself instead of God.

The Number of the Beast:

Revelation 13 links 666 to:

The Beast (Antichrist)

The False Prophet

A global system of worship, allegiance, and economic control

“No one may buy or sell except one who has the mark…” (Revelation 13:17)

This mark is not merely technological — it represents loyalty and worship.

“The Number of a Man”:

John tells believers to calculate the number. In the ancient world, this points to gematria, where letters carry numeric value.

Many scholars note:

“Nero Caesar” equals 666 in Hebrew

Nero serves as a foreshadow, not the final fulfillment.

Scripture points beyond Nero to a future, ultimate Antichrist.

A Counterfeit Kingdom-

666 reflects a false trinity:

Political power (the Beast)

Religious deception (the False Prophet)

Economic control (the Mark)

It imitates God’s kingdom but is built on human authority and rebellion.

What 666 Is NOT:

Not a random barcode or accident.

Not something believers receive unknowingly.

Not merely technology.

Receiving the mark involves conscious allegiance and worship (Revelation 14:9–11).

The Hope of the Believer:

“Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.”

— Revelation 14:12

The Beast’s number ends in judgment.

Christ’s kingdom is eternal.

“The Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings.”

— Revelation 17:14

Truth to Remember:

666 is the ultimate symbol of man exalting himself above God — and failing.
