I need to finish reading one more book before I can start really drafting my next book. But every time I sit down to read it, I fall asleep. No, I will not tell you the title. It has nothing to do with the author and everything to do with medications and 8am classes and a commute and getting kids ready for school and most of all the fact that, in general, reading puts me to sleep. Yes, there. I said it. I’m an English professor and author and reading puts me to sleep. How is this possible? How did I manage to get this far in my career with such a condition? Well I’m glad you asked.

In graduate school, I walked around the entire perimeter of Baylor’s campus doing my prelim readings (I distinctly remember reading Gravity’s Rainbow this way). Walking and reading so I couldn’t fall asleep. It worked. I passed. I also tripped at least once. And my underlining was extremely squiggly.

But now I’m old and curmudgeonly, and I don’t want to walk and read. Or even stand. I want to sit with a cup of coffee and read like a Normal Human and not fall asleep. So here I go. Wish me luck.
