As more people and media write about Russia, I wanted to clear up some misinformation and misconceptions I keep seeing.

It is impossible to understand Putin without understanding Russian history. It is also important to understand that Putin did not create Russia's security state. He is a symptom of the cruel, rotten, and repressive system that created him. And until that system is broken, nothing will change.
